Be a backyard birder

Many birds that live in the boreal and Arctic spend their winters in southern Canada. Many species of birds also stay in Canada year-round!

How you can help

Help our feathered friends get through the winter in your own backyard!

1. Create a backyard feeder for the winter. Keep it stocked with nuts and seeds preferred by the birds in your local area.

2. Use iNaturalist.ca or eBird to observe the birds you see over the winter and contribute to citizen science.

3. Leave your Christmas tree in your backyard to create habitat for wildlife in the winter.

4. Share how you’re helping to do your part for birds using #MySmallAct on social media.

Small acts on a big scale

Across Canada, NCC staff inventory the plants and animals on our properties and remove any invasive species, along with the help of our Conservation Volunteers. By doing so, we're improving habitats for native plants and animals.
